What is gum disease and how will I know I have it?

Gum disease is swelling, soreness or infection of the tissues that support your teeth, and the first sign is often blood on your toothbrush or in the sink.

There are two main forms. Gingivitis is when your gums become red and swollen, and they often bleed when you brush. Gingivitis can be reversed. If it goes on for a long time, it can turn into periodontal disease. That affects the bone that holds your teeth in the jaw. As it gets worse, teeth can become loose and may need to come out.

All gum disease is caused by plaque, a film of bacteria that forms on teeth and gums every day. Many of the bacteria are harmless, but some are the main cause of gum disease. Removing plaque every day by brushing and cleaning between your teeth is the best way to prevent and treat it.

Gum disease usually progresses without pain, so you may not notice the damage. Over several years, bone can be lost. This is why regular visits matter. You can also book a comprehensive gum assessment with a dentist or directly with the hygienist.

The best clean

I had my first appointment with the hygienist. She wasn't available and the treatment was done by the dentist. Fantastic job and definitely the best clean I've ever had.

Book a visit
What does a dental hygienist do?

A dental hygienist cleans your teeth thoroughly and gives you expert advice on how to look after your mouth at home.

Regular visits remove plaque, which is a soft, sticky film, and tartar, which is a hard deposit. Both can hide in places that are hard to reach with a toothbrush. Advice on your daily cleaning routine is a key part of the visit.

The hygienist can advise on preventing gum disease, and on fluoride, anti-bacterial products and newer dental care materials.

What is Airflow polishing?

Airflow is a polishing treatment we offer as an add-on to a hygiene visit, for £120 in total.

Your hygienist explains what Airflow involves and whether it suits you before you decide. If you are unsure, ask when you book.

Can a hygiene visit help with bad breath?

Often, yes, because persistent bad breath is usually caused by the bacteria that coat your teeth and gums.

Smoking is one of the main causes of bad breath. Some illnesses can also cause it, including nose and stomach conditions. Food caught between your teeth and on your tongue can rot and smell. Regular brushing is very important for fresh breath. Seeing your dentist regularly helps catch causes early.

How often should I see the hygienist?

Your dentist or hygienist advises how often to come, based on the health of your gums.

You can ask for a hygiene visit on the same day as your dentist check-up. Just ask the receptionist. Read more on our check-ups page.

If you feel anxious, tell us when you book. Dr Baurhoo is known for helping nervous patients. Read more on our nervous patients page.
