What happens at a dental check-up?

Your dentist examines your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks and tongue, and talks to you about your oral health.

We always do an oral cancer screening and feel around your neck and jaw to make sure everything is healthy. We ask about any problems or pain since your last visit. We also give advice on how to improve your oral health, such as your diet, how to brush and your cleaning routine.

Your dentist may take x-rays every six months to two years to check for hidden problems. These include decay and bone loss caused by gum disease.

What happens at a new patient exam?

Your first visit is a new patient exam, which costs £45 and includes your medical history, a full exam and an x-ray if needed.

You complete a medical history form. Then your dentist carries out a thorough check of your gums, teeth and mouth, followed by an x-ray if it is necessary.

The dentist also looks at your bite and your jaw. They check each tooth for decay, look for gaps and teeth that are out of line, and check for signs of gum disease. They also look at the way your teeth, lips and gums work together.

This visit is about getting to know you and helping you feel relaxed. We discuss your worries and any treatment you would like. If you are happy with your smile and your mouth is healthy, we give advice on how to keep it that way.

We offer private treatment only. We are accepting new patients in Morden. See our new patients page.

How often should I have a check-up?

Your dentist decides how often you should come, based on your own risk of dental problems.

We follow the NICE recall guidance. Your dentist assesses your risk and tells you when to come back. Someone with healthy teeth and gums may be seen less often than someone with a higher risk.

What if I need treatment?

We talk through your options with you and give you a written treatment plan and quote to take home.

We ask all our patients to take their time to think about their options. You can book when you are ready. If you have more questions, you can call and ask your dentist.

If you have plaque, stain or tartar, you may be offered a clean with our hygienist, which can be booked straight after your check-up. Just ask the receptionist. See our hygiene page.
