What we offer

How do we look after children's teeth?

We keep each visit calm and explain things in words a child can follow. Parents are welcome to stay.

  • A routine check-up to look at teeth, gums and how the mouth is growing
  • A first hygiene visit with a brushing class, a scale and polish, fluoride varnish and diet advice
  • Fissure sealants to protect the grooves of back teeth
  • Fillings, and removal of a tooth when it cannot be saved
  • An emergency assessment if your child is in pain or has hurt a tooth
  • A second opinion if you would like another view

Your child's first visit.

  1. You call us

Ring 020 8542 3711. Tell us your child's age and if they feel nervous.

  2. Meet the dentist

We say hello and talk first. Nothing is rushed.

  3. A gentle look

The dentist looks at the teeth and gums and explains what they see, to you and to your child.

  4. Advice for home

We talk through brushing and what your child eats and drinks, then agree when to come back.

What if my child is nervous?

Tell us when you book, and we will plan a slower first visit with time to talk before anything is done.

Our principal, Dr Irshad Baurhoo, is known for helping anxious patients. Children often pick up on a parent's worry, so it helps to speak about the dentist in a calm, ordinary way. Our nervous patients page explains how we work.

When should my child first see a dentist?

The NHS advises taking your child to the dentist as soon as their first teeth come through, so they get used to it early.

You do not need to wait for a problem. A short, calm first visit is a good way to start. Read the NHS guide to children's teeth for more.

What is the Practice Plan for children?

The Practice Plan is a monthly Direct Debit for children that gives a discount on treatment.

The plan is for children only. Ask us when you call about the monthly cost and what it covers, and we will tell you before you sign up.

How can I protect my child's teeth at home?

Help your child brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and keep sugary food and drinks to mealtimes.

Your dentist can show you the right amount of toothpaste for your child's age. The NHS page linked above gives clear steps. Our first hygiene visit includes a brushing class and diet advice.

Can the whole family come to Hillcross?

Yes. We are welcoming new patients of all ages, and one of our Google reviewers says the whole family use us.

Adults can read what to expect on the new patients page. If a tooth is hurting now, see emergency dentist.
